Bad Bots Beware: BotBusters Are Evolving Too

Celebrating the 25 BotBusters who earned promotions & mobility in Q1 2023! Learn what three BotBusters have to say about their recent transitions with DataDome.

Devon Walo

Talent Acquisition Manager

One of the most challenging aspects of today’s online fraud and bot threat landscape is the increasing ability of advanced bots to shift and adapt to bypass security measures. At DataDome, we know that we can only stay ahead if our team remains dynamic and innovative.

We hire the best experts in their fields, and provide our employees with the support and flexibility needed to serve their highest and best purpose, whether that means a promotion or mobility across departments. That’s how DataDome stays ahead of the curve, and ahead of fraudsters across the globe.

Our teams are constantly sharing wins together and congratulating each other. Today, we tip our hats to the 25 BotBusters who earned promotions and mobility (horizontal transition from one team to another) in Q1 2023! Let’s see what a few of them have to say about their recent transitions with DataDome.

Karim: SRE Manager → Technical Product Manager

Karim Heraud joined DataDome in 2021 as Engineering Manager, leading a team of site reliability engineers (SREs), responsible for optimizing the quality of technical service for our customers and keeping up with the pace of increased web traffic on customer sites. Karim recently decided to make a lateral move to the product team as Technical Product Manager.

For the last year and a half, Karim’s list of responsibilities included:

  • Acting as a trusted advisor on technical topics.
  • Leading incident resolutions.
  • Planning infrastructure projects.
  • Actively coding.
  • Monitoring quality and service performance.
  • Hiring skilled engineers to scale the team.

Karim explains that his position as an SRE leader was exactly what he wanted at the time: a mixture of management and hands-on technical guidance. But when the opportunity arose to challenge himself in a new space, he jumped in.

Product management of a very techy domain is something I’ve had in mind for years. I had a lot to learn before feeling ready for this transition. But what is amazing about DataDome is that we learn a lot and we learn quickly, due to the size of the technical challenges we face.

Karim believes his strong technical background is critical for him to be a successful product manager owning a technical service. He has worked in the computer science field for fifteen years, with a “geek mindset” since he was twelve years old.

My advice if someone is thinking about a transition from leadership to an individual contributor, keep your eyes and ears open for an opportunity in your current company. Changing directions can be challenging, but the risk reduces if you are with a company that values and supports employees.

– Karim Heraud, Technical Product Manager at DataDome

From the beginning, even when moving teams was just an idea, Karim felt comfortable discussing it openly. He has been fully supported by his leadership team, including CTO Gilles Walbrou, VP of Product Paul Scanlon, and DataDome’s people operations department, especially Stéphanie Fradin, Lead People Experience.

I achieved what I wanted to do as the manager of the SRE team, I felt confident in them and what we built. I’m glad to see we continue to work together with a foundation of trust and kindness.

Karim now utilizes his in-depth knowledge of DataDome’s solution to own the technical product roadmap for platform topics. He adds value by proposing new architectures, features, and improvements while acting as a technical solution provider for customers. His technical skills are applicable to DataDome’s growing product team, and the same concept applies to non-technical teams as well.

Wen: SDR → BDR → Junior Paralegal

Wen Lee started her journey with DataDome two years ago as a sales development representative (SDR), and soon earned a promotion to business development representative (BDR). Most recently, she has moved into our legal department as Junior Paralegal.

As an SDR and BDR, Wen became an expert in market trend analysis. As one of the first points of contact for potential customers, her mission was to:

  • Have a deep understanding of the market.
  • Identify the needs and challenges of prospects.
  • Most importantly, set the tone of a long-term partnership to bring in business.

Wen explains that in SDR and BDR roles, you learn many different skills through practice and experience, which helped her grow significantly in her career. One of the greatest strengths she mastered was how to effectively communicate, present to, and influence executive-level prospects.

Her strengthened communication aptitude now translates into her Junior Paralegal role, as she is one of the initial points of contact for the legal team. As Junior Paralegal, Wen focuses on improving processes to help the team become increasingly efficient, which requires significant organization and communication with various stakeholders, internally and externally.

This new opportunity allows me to see DataDome through another perspective, which is very interesting to me.

– Wen Lee, Junior Paralegal at DataDome

Wen now reports to our Global Legal Manager and Data Privacy Officer Romain Catala, and has been introduced to an entirely new set of responsibilities. She conducts research and analysis of legal matters, monitors the entire life cycle of contractual agreements, participates in the development of internal communication tools, and more.

I’m very lucky to have strong support from my manager, Romain. Without him believing in me, this transition would not be happening as smoothly as it is.

For Wen, it was important to find a career path that corresponds with her personality. When making this decision, she chose to follow her inner voice and allowed her intuition to guide her. She strongly believes when an opportunity appears, one that aligns with her interests, it is always worth trying out.

Ben: Ad Campaign Freelancer → Growth Marketer → VP of Growth

Benjamin Alliguié joined DataDome in 2018 as a freelancer managing LinkedIn and Google Ad campaigns. After a few months of successful collaboration and positive results, he was hired as the company’s first growth marketing employee. Since then, his mission has been to help DataDome achieve revenue targets as we scale.

Ben leads the growth team, which includes experts in demand generation, outbound marketing, paid acquisition, growth operations, and website product management. His team generates the largest source of revenue for DataDome. As further proof of the team’s success, Ben was recognized as a finalist in the 2022 France Growth Awards for “Best Strategy”.

After earning multiple promotions with DataDome over time, Ben was named our Vice President of Growth in Q1 2023! He has 10 years of experience in digital marketing and formerly launched his own company. But even though he has managed many teams throughout his career, his leadership role with DataDome was his first time hiring and managing remote teams across different continents and time zones.

I’ve definitely learned a lot as a manager with DataDome. Through this journey, I’ve learned how to help people with diverse cultures, mindsets, and personalities grow and succeed.

Although the group is globally distributed, Ben hosts frequent virtual meetups to increase camaraderie and celebrate achievements. He keeps his management style and leadership approach consistent regardless of his job title, and shares that the most valuable leadership trait he’s absorbed is transparency. Ben also emphasizes the importance of having strong objectives and performance evaluation frameworks to align everyone toward a common goal.

I strive to lead by example and provide as much transparency and support to my team as possible. Clear communication regarding my expectations, decisions, and thought processes helps them trust and have confidence in me.

Benjamin Alliguié, Vice President of Growth at DataDome

Ben also encourages his team to practice continual learning by providing them with relevant content and conference opportunities related to their expertise. His support for the team’s professional development has resulted in more than 50% of growth team promotions or evolutions within the last two years.

I want each team member to feel excited about their mission, engaged in their work, and happy with the results they create. To achieve this, it is very important to develop learning and celebrate successes!

He stresses the importance of praising the team for their contributions to the company’s success. Whether it is recognition through public channels on Slack or weekly and quarterly reviews, applauding the wins of other BotBusters is a daily priority.

Congrats to our growing, dynamic BotBusters!

To every team member who elevated their scope and responsibilities in Q1, congratulations on a job well done! Your contributions every day make a huge impact on the fight against fraud. Thank you for your continued #Passion, #TeamSpirit, #CustomerCentric mindset, and commitment to the #Growth of DataDome and your role as a BotBuster.
